According to GameSpot, the United States will now award visas to League of Legends players. Why? Well, thanks to a little help from Riot Games’ Nick Allen, the government now sees tournament level players as professional athletes.
I’m not sure whether I should be face-palming or cheering for this decision. I kind of wish they had made some sort of different category for these gamers. As defined by Dictionary.com an athlete is defined as “a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill”. In a sense, I guess these players have physical skill with the precision of their mouse clicks and hotkey accuracy… but I really wouldn’t consider them “athletes”.
Now I’m not saying I’m upset that these people are allowed to receive visas so they can partake in events on US soil. I just don’t think the should be labeled as athletes.
